Tour Summary
19 Nights - For the detailed itinerary, click here
Meals: 19 Breakfasts 18 Lunches 15 Dinners
Day 1: Leaving the Mother City Behind
Following a brief stop to get some last minute pictures of Table Mountain over Table Bay, continue north for the Cederberg mountain region. Enjoy the view that these spectacular rock formations of sandstone and shale produce. Along the way stop at a local !Kwattu village for a guided tour with a San guide.
Day 2: Crossing the Orange River
Continue north as you travel through the big sky country of the Namaqua land, crossing the Gariep River into Namibia. In the spring the region becomes a colourful array of reds, blues, and greens as millions of wild flowers bloom.
The evening is spent sitting under the stars around a camp fire getting to know your fellow travellers.
Day 3: Looking Down into the Fish River Canyon
Before beginning your travels for the day, you can choose between a relaxing morning of sitting along the riverbank of the Orange River, or embark on a half-day canoe adventure floating down the river.
After lunch make your way north to Fish River Canyon – the second largest canyon in the world. First, stop at your campsite in Hobas to set up, before heading over to the canyon to view the sunset.
Day 4: Spending the Night in Big Sky Country
Today is a bit of a long driving day as you journey into the remote hinterland of Namibia. There’ll be an opportunity to stop along the way to stock up on some supplies for the day, such as water or biltong – South African dried meat.
Set off in the afternoon to visit the smaller, but just as intriguing Sesriem Canyon. If you don’t mind the potential of bugs, tonight is an excellent night for sleeping out under the stars beside the fire.
Day 5: Climbing Dune 45
Today wake up early and head into the Namib-Naukluft National Park where you can hike up the impressive Dune 45 as the sun rises into the sky. Marvel at how the sun turns the sands of these massive dunes from reds to oranges and apricots.
After your climb, join your fellow travelers for a nice breakfast at the overland truck before taking a guided tour with a local expert who’ll explain the desert ecosystem, and possibly take you to the Deadvlei – a clay pan interspersed with dead camel thorn trees.
Days 6-7: Getting a Rush in Swakopmund
Following a quick stop to get a picture crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, travel through the moon-like landscape of the Kuiseb Valley to the adventure capital of Namibia, Swakopmund. Along the way, you may stop at the Walvis Bay lagoon to observe the flamingos that frequent it.
Once in Swakopmund, enjoy the rest of the day as you explore the town before dinner (not included) at one of the local restaurants.
The next day get your heart pumping with some optional adrenalin activities such as quad biking, skydiving, or sand boarding. For those not look for so much excitement, explore the quaint town of Swakopmund as you wander the streets stopping at the many shops and cafes in the town centre.
Day 8: Discovering Spitzkoppe
This morning leave all the modern amenities of life behind as you travel inland to the mysterious Spitzkoppe. The area is a sacred site to the San people and consists of the core of an ancient volcano that had the outside layers eroded away.
Tonight camp out in the wild. Without the diffusion of light, marvel at how bright and many stars there are in the sky. You’ll almost want to reach up and touch them.
Day 9: Meeting the Himba People
Start your day with some exploration of the area before you travel towards Kamanjab. Once at the camp, visit a local Himba village and learn about these semi-nomadic people who are easily recognised by their unique style of dress.
Days 10-11: Exploring Etosha National Park
Your journey continues to the north through to Namibia’s premier game park – Etosha National Park. With nearly 340 bird and 100 mammals species, including 3,000 elephants and the biggest population of black rhino, you will have one of the most varied game viewing experiences in Africa.
Spend two days exploring this fantastic park for as much wildlife as you can on several morning and late afternoon game drives. In the evening, wander over to the camp’s floodlit water hole to view some of the nocturnal animals that come for a drink.
Day 12: Overnighting in Windhoek
Have one last morning game drive before you set off south to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. Stop along the way to do some shopping at the local craft market.
Embark in the afternoon on a short city tour, followed by an evening out at one of Windhoek’s interesting restaurants, such as Joe’s Beer House – a unique restaurant in both décor and dishes.
Day 13: Entering Botswana
Today you head east to the Buitepos border crossing and cross into Botswana as you continue on to Ghanzi for the night. Once at the camp take the opportunity to visit a local bushman community and experience some traditional dancing.
Days 14-16: Marveling at the Mighty Victoria Falls
Your day will start early as you make your way to Maun – the gateway to the Okavango Delta – and your stop for the night in preparation for your 2-night bush camping experience. You may want to stock up on a few supplies while in town.
The next morning board a 4x4 vehicle for your drive to the mokoro station on the edge of the Delta. From here you hop into a traditional dug out canoe and tranquilly float further into the Delta.
Spend the next two days exploring the crystal clear waters and countless islands on either foot or in the mokoro for an amazing variety of animals and birds.
Note: Malaria is high in the Delta, and so you should cover yourselves and use repellent.
Day 17: Making Your Way to the Makgadikgadi Pans
Today say goodbye to the Delta and continue eastward towards Gweta – a small town situated between Maun and Nata, near the Makgadikgadi Pans.
Day 18: Searching for Elephants on the Chobe River
After traveling up ‘elephant alley’ you arrive in the town of Kasane, where you’ll set up camp along the banks of the Chobe River. In the late afternoon, set out on a sunset cruise down the river as you sit back and view the impressive wildlife that comes to the shoreline to cool off.
Day 19: Visiting the Smoke That Thunders
Arriving in Victoria Falls around lunch, you have time to plan your activities for tomorrow, while taking the afternoon to visit the mighty ‘smoke that thunders’ – Victoria Falls.
Finish the day with a stunning sunset cruise on the waters of the Zambezi River, again observing the impressive wildlife that use the waters of the river to cool off.
Day 20: Tour Ends in Victoria Falls
Your tour, officially, ends after breakfast, but you still have time in the day to partake in one of the many adrenalin filled activities – white water rafting, bungee jumping, helicopter flights over the Falls – before your flight, or the continuation of your travels. How you finish your tour will be up to you, but one way or another, it’ll be excellent we’re sure.
