Tour Summary
12 Nights
Meals: 12 Breakfasts 13 Lunches 12 Dinners
Day 1: Sip a Robust Red in Stellenbosch
Begin your journey with a drive to the Spier Wine Estate just outside of Stellenbosch, for the opportunity to taste some of the estate’s excellent wines, and visit the Cheetah Breeding Centre.
After the stop, continue on to Swellendam for the night. Spend the night getting to know your fellow travelers and learning what to expect while on the road.
Day 2: Tour the Cango Caves
Today you travel along some picturesque routes to Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves. The caves are an impressive collection of caverns and formations under the Swartzberg Mountains. After a guided tour, you’ll head to your camp site for the evening.
Day 3: Exploring the Coastal Town of Knysna
Visit this morning an ostrich farm, and get up close with these flight-less birds. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of South Africa. Following your visit, continue your journey along the Garden Route to Knysna.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy how you’d like. Knysna is a popular coastal town, and has several optional activities to do such as a boat cruise on the lagoon, a hike up the Knysna Heads, or just wander the streets stopping at the shops along the way.
Days 4-5: Hike the Otter Trail
Continue along the stunning Garden Route, today, until you reach one of South Africa’s secret attractions, the Tsitsikamma National Park. Two nights of your tour will be spent at this superb coastal park. Take the opportunity to hike a few kilometres of the Otter Trail, partake in a treetop canopy tour, or for the adventurous, bungee jump off the world’s highest bungee jump.
Day 6: Spot the Wildlife in Addo
Your journey continues eastward as you cross into the Eastern Cape, and Addo Elephant National Park, home to several of Africa’s large animals. Once inside the park, you’ll explore the area in your tour vehicle. The height of the truck will give you an excellent view of the elephants, rhino, and the few lions in the park.
Days 7-8: Experience Tolkein’s Inspiration
Following a morning game drive in Addo, depart the park and make your way east to the quaint and picturesque community of Hogsback, via Port Elizabeth. The rest of the day will be yours to explore this breathtaking area. Hire a mountain bike and explore the original Afro-Montane forest that still exists, and gave J.R.R. Tolkein his inspiration for Middle Earth.
The next day, head out on a guided hike to one of the falls in the area, either the Swallow Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, or the Madonna & Child Falls. The choice is yours.
Days 9-10: Cross into the Kingdom of Lesotho
Today you depart South Africa and cross into one of the highest countries in the world, the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho. It’s expected that you’ll arrive in the late afternoon to your camp site, so just sit back and relax at the camp on your first night.
Wake up early on your second day, so you can explore this fascinating country on an optional guided pony trekking excursion. In the afternoon get a chance to learn about the local culture as you visit a village and school.
Days 111-2: Hike in the Drakensberg Mountains
This morning make your way to the Royal Natal National Park in the Drakensberg Mountains. These mountains are South Africa’s highest, and offer some breathtaking views as you wander the paths in the park.
The following day hike some more as you partake in a guided walk to look at some San rock paintings. Later in the day, if time permits, visit a local Zulu school project that’s run in the region.
Day 13: End your Tour in Durban
Say goodbye to the high elevations of the Drakensberg Mountains as you head down (literally) to the low lying coastal city of Durban. Your tour will end once you arrive in Durban. Hopefully you have organise some time in Durban or a late flight out so you can sample some of Durban’s excellent curry restaurants.
