Meet up in Arusha, a thriving town at the foot of Mount Meru. Because of its altitude, it has a mild climate and is generally lush and green. From there, head out to Tarangire National Park, which supports 550 recorded bird species and big game in its varied habitats. Along with a substantial elephant population, Tarangire National Park is also home to the elusive Big 5.

Day 2: The Rift Valley Escarpment

After a game drive in the coolness and stillness of the early morning, depart Tarangire National park and drive along an exciting series of tracks along the Rift Valley Escarpment. This route affords amazing views of the valley and the looming 3 000m-high Mount Gelai, which is one of the loftiest volcanos in the crater highlands and sacred to the Maasai tribes. Driving past a succession of remote villages, you reach the tiny hamlet of Ngare Sero. Shady trees and a nearby waterfall make it a welcoming oasis, while in the distance, the green water of Lake Natron shimmers pink with the plumage of thousands of flamingos. Arriving on the shores of this ancient lake, you reach your campsite for the night: be sure to keep an eye out for playful Sykes and colobus monkeys.

Day 3: Lake Natron to the Serengeti

An early start sees you climbing the dirt tracks out of the valley, gazing at spectacular views as you leave the glittering Lake Natron behind you. By midday, you are surrounded by the vast golden plains of the Serengeti, a region famous for being the scene of the greatest migration on earth. At certain times of the year, over a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles make the huge circular trek in pursuit of water and fresh grazing, undeterred by the multitude of predators that follow them closely. Outside of this season, a plethora of resident animals are present, making for a fantastic wildlife experience on the relatively uncrowded plains.

Enjoy viewing a multitude of animals along the way, and then explore the wildlife riches of this region in the afternoon. In the campsite in the evening, enjoy a hearty dinner under the stars, and listen to the sounds of Africa echoing through the night around you.

After witnessing the sun rising over the crater, which arguably ranks as one of the most awesome natural sights in Africa, drive down the steep walls into the crater floor. The caldera forms a natural enclosure that is populated by a staggering variety of animals in great numbers. Virtually every animal found in East Africa is represented here and you have every chance of encountering the Big 5 within the space of the morning. Keep a lookout for both species of rhino that are found here: massive prehistoric looking beasts that are tragically on the verge of extinction. In the late afternoon, drive back out of the crater towards the town of Mto wa Mbu, and arrive at your campsite before sunset.

The drive takes you through wondrously imposing landscapes until you spot glacier-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance, looming closer and closer until you reach Arusha, where your adventure comes to an end. If you are spending time in Arusha, shop in the markets for Maasai jewellery and traditional kikois (striped cloth that can be used as a wrap, sling, turban or tablecloth), which made great mementoes of your trip.
