Vilanculos, 700km north
of Maputo, is the springboard town for the Bazaruto Archipelago, the
chain of islands dotted along the coast.
It’s only a small seaside town but tourism is well-established. It has been a favourite destination for South
African holidaymakers since the end of Mozambique’s civil war.
There are frequent international flights into Vilanculos from Johannesburg
and Harare.
It has some beautiful beaches, a lively night life and excellent lodges,
backpackers and a campsite. In the old days Vilanculos was dominated
by the Donna Anna Hotel. Today the Donna Anna is in bad repair, but you can
appreciate the nostalgia of its fallen glory and enjoy great views
of the harbour. It is a busy, bustling town with a lively atmosphere
and friendly people. There is a great market selling fresh produce
and every kind of fish imaginable, plus a number of restaurants serving
delicious seafood.
Vilanculos's resorts offer diving, fishing and sea kayaking, or you
can take a traditional dhow or motorised boat to the islands that
lie approximately 55km off the coast.
