The Namibian coast, known
for its unique scenic beauty, is also regarded as one of the best
fishing grounds in the world. Fishing is good from Sandwich
Harbour, south of Walvis Bay up to Terrace Bay, in the Skeleton Coast
Park.
Fishing trips can be done either by boat or from the shore and no
previous experience is required. This is a great place to try
it if you’ve never gone fishing before. Full day all-inclusive
trips are on offer and fisherman are allowed to keep their catch to
cook and eat that night, though shark fishing follows a tag-and-release
policy and crayfish can only be caught in season.
Deep-sea game fishing for snoek, yellowtail and tuna is done in ski
boats carrying 4-8 people. They are fully equipped with all the necessary
angling equipment, bait, fish-finder equipment and experienced guides.
On the shore, the surf angling potential of Namibia’s Atlantic
coast is regarded as one of the best in Africa. Thousands of anglers
from all over southern Africa visit Swakopmund and Henties Bay each
year.
Namibia's best time for angling is between November and March. Prized catches include kob, steenbras, galjoen and blacktail. In other
parts of the country, tiger fishing is just one of the types of freshwater
fishing that can be done in the Caprivi Strip on the Chobe and Zambezi
rivers. Fish of up to 9kg have been caught in these waters. There
are several ways to enjoy tiger fishing, either on an organised safari,
or by visiting one of the lodges in the area.
