Sightseeing flights are
on offer from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay into most parts of Namibia.
Flights vary from one-and-a-half hour flips along the coast to all
day safaris to northern Namibia that include landings and 4x4 adventures.
From the air you can clearly see Namibia’s desert landscapes,
dried up riverbeds, moonscapes, rock formations, mountains and gravel
plains. Along the coast you fly over thousands of flamingos and pelicans
on the lagoons south of Walvis Bay, or seals and dolphins to the north
of Swakopmund at Cape Cross. In breeding season as many as 100 000
seals choose to sit on the same piece of rock. Seeing them from
the air is quite a spectacle.
Flights that follow the infamous and treacherous Skeleton Coast offer
views of the harsh coastline and gloomy shipwrecks pounded by the
Atlantic Ocean. Inland, the spectacular sea of dunes marches
determinedly towards the sea. You can fly right over Sossusvlei
before heading back to Swakopmund over Namibia’s Diamond Restricted
Area and the remains of abandoned diamond camps.
To the north, flights go past Namibia’s highest mountain, the
Brandberg, over Damaraland and Kaokoland to Opuwo. In Opuwo, there’s
the opportunity to land and visit a Himba village in the area. The
Himba are a people of semi-nomadic pastoralists who still live and
dress according to ancient traditions.
Namibia is really a country that is best appreciated from the air,
and sightseeing flights are a great way to admire the unusual
and dramatic landscapes.
