There is nothing as magical
as floating over herds of wildlife in the Serengeti in a colourful
hot air balloon. It’s a great way to see the game and the savannah
plains, without the intrusion of vehicles and loads of other people
all trying to do the same thing.
Balloon flights start shortly after dawn, when the air is cool and
calm and the animals are at their most active. The balloon blow-up
is part of the show, and once the balloon rises, passengers have the
chance to watch the sunrise high above the plains. The flight is magically
silent, save for the hiss of the burner. Tthe pilot steers the
balloon over canopies of trees and woodland, and dips down to get
closer to the game on the plains.
The best time to go ballooning is during the wildebeest migration
from June when up to 1.5 million wildebeest and 250 000 zebra move
from the dry plains of the Serengeti to the fresh grasses of the Masai
Mara. Seeing these vast herds of many thousands of grunting and snorting
animals is a once in a lifetime experience.
After the landing there’s a champagne breakfast under the arms
of an Acacia tree to celebrate your flight, and a flight certificate
is issued on completion of the balloon safari.
