The spice island of Zanzibar’s
real name is Unquia. It’s part of the Zanzibar Archipelago,
which also includes the island of Pemba, 40 km to the northeast,
and 50 smaller, mostly uninhabited islands in the surrounding
waters. Today’s Zanzibar is a place of fragile Islamic culture, noble Arabian architecture, romantic white-sailed dhows and miles of sandy palm fringed beaches.
