DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Drive to the Market Town of Nanyuki
Meals: HB

Leave Nairobi behind you as you head north, crossing the equator and arriving in the market town of Nanyuki, where you'll spend the night.

Nanyuki is home to the main base of Kenya's Air Force, and is close to impressive Mount Kenya, the country's highest peak at 5199m.

Days 2-3: Explore the Samburu National Reserve
Meals: FB

Today you'll head north-west through the Kikuyu area around Mount Kenya and onto the Samburu National Reserve, a remote and unspoilt wilderness home to the Ewaso Ng'iro River.

Spend the following day exploring this rugged yet scenic reserve as you search for Africa's Big 5. Remember to be on the lookout for the rarer Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and Somali Ostrich.

Days 4-5: See the Flamingos at Lake Nakuru
Meals: FB

Leave the unique Samburu National Reserve behind and head west into the Rift Valley Province and onto Nakuru, where you'll spend the night.

The next day you'll head into the Lake Nakuru National Park, home to thousands of lesser and greater flamingoes that flock to the edge of the soda lake. The numbers do vary depending on the water level, but when it's low, the lake turns almost completely pink!

Look out for the rare black rhino; the park was established as a sanctuary to protect these endangered animals.

Day 6: Cross the Border into Uganda
Meals: FB

Today you'll cross the Kenyan border into Uganda and travel to the lakeside town of Jinja, meaning 'Source of the Nile'. Continue to Kampala, the capital of Uganda, where you'll spend the night.

Uganda is a small, yet strikingly beautiful country, with diverse landscapes including snow-capped mountains, fertile valleys and semi-desert regions.

Days 7-8: Experience a Gorilla Trek
Meals: FB

After an early morning departure from bustling Kampala you'll head west to Kisoro, the base of most gorilla trekking operations.

Depending on the location of the gorillas and where permits are available, you'll trek in the Mgahinga or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda, the Virunga National Park in the DRC or the Ruhengeri National Park in Rwanda.

Set out into the depths of the forests as you search for the mountain gorillas, a trek which may take anywhere from 45 minutes to 8 hours in muddy, wet and difficult conditions.

Once you come across a troop, the time spend in the mud will be all worthwhile. Spend an hour watching them eat, sleep and play before heading back to your camp.

Days 9-11: Relax at Lake Bunyoni
Meals: FB

Head down the mountains and through some of Uganda's most picturesque areas on your way to Lake Bunyoni, the deepest Crater Lake in Africa and home to a large number of bird and fish species.

The next two days are spent at leisure to enjoy the beauty of Lake Bunyoni. Relax and enjoy the surroundings, or swim, canoe, hike or visit the local villages.

Days 12-13: Travel Back to Kampala
Meals: FB

After enjoying the peaceful surrounds of Lake Bunyoni, you'll drive back to Kampala where you'll spend the next two days exploring markets and museums, or taking a day trip to the Ngamba Chimpanzee Sancutary.

There will be time to stop at the Equator for some photographs.

Days 14-15: Raft on the Nile River
Meals: FB

After a short drive to Jinja, you'll have the next day and a half to raft on the mighty Nile River, visit the local community project or enjoy a quad bike ride along the scenic riverbank.

The resident birdlife in your riverside camp is a great photo opportunity!

Days 16-17: Arrive at Kenya's Lake Naivasha
Meals: FB

Spend a full day driving back into Kenya with a night at a campsite in Nakuru, where you'll have a chance of a game drive in the Lake Nakuru National Park, before arriving at Lake Naivasha.

Day 18: Visit Elsamere
Meals: FB

Today you'll travel south-east and enter Lake Naivasha, home to a diverse birdlife, including the African fish eagle. At 1880m, this is the highest of the Rift Valley lakes.

Time permitting, you can spend the afternoon enjoying optional excursions, like visiting Elsamere, the former home of Joy and George Adamson of Born Free fame, taking a boat ride to the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary or mountain-biking around Hell's Gate National Park.

Days 19-20: Enter the Land of the Maasai
Meals: FB

Leave Lake Naivasha behind and enter Maasai land, where you may see proud warriors in full regalia going about their day. Pass through the town of Narok before arriving at Acacia Camp which overlooks the Meguarra hills.

The following day you'll enjoy a spectacular game drive in the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, home to the annual wildebeest migration. Look out for the Big 5 and elusive predators hiding in the grass.

Return to camp for sunset and share your stories around the campfire.

Day 21: Head Back to Nairobi
Meals: HB

After breakfast you'll leave the Masai Mara and head back to Nairobi. On arrival, you'll deliver some fellow passengers to the Hotel Boulevard before arriving at your campsite for the night.

Day 22: Cross the Border into Tanzania
Meals: FB

This morning you'll collect the passengers who will join you on the next leg of your overland trek. Head south and cross the border into Tanzania before arriving in Meserani, a lovely town on the outskirts of Arusha.

Here you'll prepare for your optional excursions into the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater the following day.

Days 23-25: Explore the Serengeti & Ngorongoro
Meals: FB

Arusha is the starting point for Tanzanian safaris, and this is where you'll head out in a locally operated 4WD vehicle to explore the renowned Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.

Travel via Mto Wa Mbu to Karatu, a village offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills, and where you'll spend the night. The following day you'll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site boasting some of the best game viewing in Africa, including the black rhino.

After your game drive you'll drive past Olduvai Gorge - 'The Cradle of Mankind' - on your way to the Serengeti. Here you'll experience the first taste of this renowned park on a drive through the central and southern areas to your camp.

The following morning is spend on another game drive searching for Africa's Big 5 before heading back along the lush Crater rim to Arusha.

For those not visiting the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, the next few days are spent at leisure enjoying the Meserani reptile park, Maasai Cultural Museum and the surrounding villages and craft markets.

Days 26-27: Head South to Dar es Salaam
Meals: FB

After an enjoyable morning exploring Arusha and its vibrant craft markets, you'll head south towards to bustling seaside town of Dar es Salaam.

Drive through the town of Moshi, the base for Mount Kilimanjaro climbing expeditions, so look out for a glimpse of Kili's snowy peak. Travel through the sisal plantations of the Usambara and Para Mountain ranges before reaching your campsite, located midway between Arusha and Dar.

The following day you'll head towards the coast and travel through lush scenery to Dar es Salaam, where you'll spend a night in a pretty seaside campsite.

Days 28-30: Explore Zanzibar - The Spice Island
Meals: FB

Take the ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar where you have the option to spend the next 3 nights. This historic island is known for its long, white beaches, excellent diving, spice plantations and rich culture.

Enjoy a tour through Stone Town, with its crumbly old buildlings and Arabic influence, or take a day trip to Prison Island and see the giant tortoises. Set off for Nungwe on a full-day scuba dive or relax in a traditional dhow boat.

Zanzibar has so much to offer, and is a seafood lover's paradise.

Please note that accommodation and meals are for your own account on Zanzibar, as most overlanders prefer to explore the island on their own.

If you are not visiting Zanzibar then these 3 days are spent at leisure at the beach campsite in Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian coast.

Day 31: Say Goodbye in Dar es Salaam
Meals: BB

Leave Zanzibar behind and return to the mainland in the late afternoon where you can exchange addresses with your fellow overlanders, and where you tour comes to an end.
