A comfortable 10-day overland tour taking in the deserts, parks and towns of Namibia.
This Namibian overland safari combines the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei with the stark contrasts of the Namib Desert and the vast pans of Etosha National Park.
Over 10 days you'll explore this beautiful land, encounter big game and get your adrenalin pumping in Swakopmund - Namibia's adventure capital.
DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Drive Through the Khomas Hockland Meals: HB
You depart from the Chameleon Guesthouse and Backpackers in Windhoek at 08h30.
Following a drive through the rugged Khomas Hochland mountain range you descend to the desert floor via the Gamsberg Pass, an imposing flat topped mountain and one of the highest points in Namibia, which provides a dramatic back drop for your roadside lunch.
After a short stop at Solitaire, you arrive at camp mid-afternoon and enjoy a late afternoon walk across the desert to Elimâs Dune on the edge of the famous sand dune sea with views across to the nearby mountains.
You return to camp just after sunset to enjoy dinner prepared by your guide. Overnight camping.
Day 2: Explore Sesriem & Sossusvlei Meals: FB
You leave camp before dawn to drive to Sossusvlei where you watch the sunrise over this spectacular and unique area (dependent on opening time of inner park gate).
You then walk to Dead Vlei, an expanse of bleached, cracked clay with skeletal camel thorn trees scattered around that contrasts strongly with the backdrop of huge orange-red dunes, making for superb photographic opportunities.
You enjoy a mid-morning brunch after exploring this dramatic and desolate landscape before returning to camp for a swim.
In the afternoon you explore the nearby Sesriem Canyon on foot followed by another spectacular sunset in this colourful desert.
Day 3: Arrive in Historical Swakopmund Meals: FB
You depart from the camp in the early morning, stopping at the one horse town of Solitaire before continuing through the desert with its endless views across the pastel-coloured gravel plains to the port town of Walvis Bay - the lagoon of which is home to thousands of pelicans and flamingoes.
You continue onto the quaint, historical town of Swakopmund, where your guide will assist those wishing to book optional adventure activities such as sand boarding, quad biking, scenic flights, parachuting and dolphin cruises to name but a few.
Overnight in comfortable en suite twin/double rooms, in a guest house located close to the town centre. This eveningâs meal is a group dinner in a restaurant at your own expense.
Day 4: Camp Among the Rocks of Spitzkoppe Meals: FB
This morning you have free time to visit the museum and aquarium, explore the town, or partake in optional activities such as sand boarding and quad biking.
Departing after lunch, you drive along a section of the Skeleton Coast before turning inland for Spitzkoppe, a huge inselberg towering above the dry desert plains; you arrive in the late afternoon to set up camp.
You have the opportunity to explore the area and appreciate the wonderful rock formations that have been created by erosion over thousands of years. The evening is spent under the stars with dinner prepared by the guide and camp assistant.
Day 5: View Ancient Bushman Paintings Meals: FB
This morning you enjoy a walk to Bushmanâs Paradise, viewing the ancient bushman paintings and vistas of the vast surrounding desert, alternatively, you may simply wander around the desert floor.
From here the drive takes you through some beautiful and dramatic landscapes, arriving at camp in the late afternoon.
Hobatere borders western Etosha and the camp is set in the bush amongst boulders and trees; game, including elephant, may wander around freely and there are no fences to separate the camp from concession land.
Tonight you'll camp with dinner prepared by your guide and camp assistant.
Day 6: Learn About the Himba People Meals: FB
Today you can relax at the camp, enjoy a walk in the surrounding land or watch the game come to drink at the waterhole, from the nearby hide.
Alternatively, you may opt to join a day trip through to Opuwo and visit the local Himba tribes. These remarkable, proud people live in the Kunene region; formally cattle/goat herders, some still live a traditional lifestyle in this harsh environment.
You can also choose to go rhino tracking; by taking part in this activity you will contribute to saving the endangered black rhino. In addition, the Damaraland Wildlife Excursion is another way to see the diverse wildlife of the area.
You overnight here, with dinner prepared by your guide.
Day 7: Arrive in Etosha National Park Meals: FB
You pick up fresh supplies at Outjo and then enjoy a game drive to the park gate for lunch.
After lunch you continue your game drive through to camp and, after setting up your tents, you take a late afternoon game drive visiting many waterholes and looking out for predators and dusty elephants.
You also have the opportunity to enjoy nocturnal game viewing at the floodlit waterhole.
Dinner is prepared by the guide with group assistance.
Day 8: Drive Through the Park to Halali Meals: FB
Depart camp at sunrise for a full morning's game drive, travelling across the park and visiting various waterholes along the way.
You spend the hottest part of the day at Halali camp where you have lunch and enjoy a swim or an afternoon snooze.
Take a late afternoon game drive via the famous Etosha Pan. Once again you can round off your day with nocturnal game viewing at the floodlit waterhole.
Dinner is prepared by the guide with group assistance.
Day 9: Visit the Africat Foundation Meals: FB
Exit Etosha National Park this morning on your way to Okonjima, where on the way you'll make a quick stop at Otavi to puck up fresh supplies.
You'll continue to your camp at the Africat Fountation, an initiative that cares for injured leopard and cheetah.
Enjoy dinner prepared by your guide and camp assistant, and spend the evening around the campfire.
Day 10: Drive Back to Windhoek Meals: BB
Your guide will take you on a short hike through the ravine at the base of the plateau. After brunch you return to Windhoek via the Okahandja Craft Markets for those last minute gifts.
You arrive at the guesthouse in Windhoek where you can enjoy an after safari drink and share your memories of your safari, which has now come to an end.
