Our Top Picks for Travel in June

Posted on July 23rd, 2020 by Overland Africa

Our Top Picks for Travel in June

Our Top Picks for Travel in June

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda

Season-Winter Average Temperature for June -20 Celsius 66 Fahrenheit

What: Superb gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

Why: Both lie in Africa’s equatorial rainforest belt but in June, Uganda’s rainfall is a fifth of what it was in March while Rwanda’s precipitation is down by 90 percent compared to April. This dry spell makes trekking much easier as there is less heavy-going mud. More sunlight also penetrates the forest canopy, making it lighter for photographers hoping to snap the ultimate gorilla shot.

Grumeti River Tanzania

Season-Winter Average Temperature for June-21 Celsius 70 Fahrenheit

What: Witness thousands of wildebeest crossing the Grumeti River during their annual migration around the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem.

Why: The river crossings are considered one of the most dramatic aspects of the Wildebeest Migration and thousands of safari goers flock to see them. The Grumeti crossings are far more exclusive because they take place in the private Grumeti Reserve. This means far fewer vehicles and people, making for a far more exclusive experience.

Masai Mara National Park Kenya

Season-WinterAverage Temperature for June-19 Celsius-66 Fahrenheit

What: Classic game viewing without the crowds.

Why: The weather is cooler and drierand the animals aren’t venturing too far from water or grazing as winter settles in, making for superb game viewing. The other bonus is that the Wildebeest Migration is generally still in the Grumeti and Serengeti in Tanzania, making Kenya far less crowded. You may not see the Migration but you will see the Masai Mara’s iconic sunsets and rolling savannah.

Our Top Picks for Travel in April

Posted on July 23rd, 2020 by Overland Africa

Our Top Picks for Travel in April

CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA

Our Top Picks for Travel in April

Season-Autumn Average Temperature for April-22 Celsius-71 Fahrenheit

What: Wine tasting in Franschhoek or Constantia, visiting the African penguins at Boulders Beach, climbing the lighthouse at Cape Point and taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain.

Why: April heralds classic autumn weather in South Africa’s oldest and most beautiful city. The heat and south-easterly winds of summer have passed, and the chilly drizzle of winter is yet to set in, making this month almost perfect in terms of the weather.

Bazaruto Archipelago Mozambique

Season-AutumnAverage Temperature for April-25 Celsius-76 Fahrenheit

What: Snorkelling and scuba diving. Not to mention spa treatments, seafood feasts and long walks on the beach.

Why: By April, the five islands that make up the Bazaruto Archipelago are drying up after the summer rains before peak season arrive. Visitor numbers are slowly growing, leaving you with a good choice of honeymoon or family vacation.

Sossusvlei & Etosha National Park Namibia

Season-AutumnAverage Temperature for April-23 Celsius 73 Fahrenheit

What: Spellbinding landscapes at Sossusvlei and rewarding game watching in Etosha.

Why: The intense heat of summer has passed and the rain is pretty much over but the cold evenings of winter are yet to arrive. The landscape still has some greenery and pools of water dot it here and there.

Our Top Picks for Travel In March

Posted on July 23rd, 2020 by Overland Africa

Our Top Picks for Travel In March

Southern Serengeti Tanzania

Why: By March, the thousands of babies that ‘dropped’ in January and February are strong enough to join their parents on their trans-savannah trek. It is also Green Season in Tanzania, meaning low rates and low visitor numbers but high opportunities for photographers.
What to see: Seeing the mega herds of the Wildebeest Migration begin to move northwards.

Our Top Picks for Travel In March

Sabi Sands Game Reserve South Africa
Why: The Sabi Sands shares an unfenced border with Kruger, making it one of the most exciting game destinations in the country. By March, summer’s afternoon thunderstorms are largely over but the vegetation remains lush and verdant – an excellent backdrop for photographers.
What to see: Excellent leopard and rhino sightings in Big 5 country, topped off by incredible accommodation and service as well as night drives and nature walks.

Top Picks for Travel in February

Posted on June 30th, 2020 by Overland Africa

Top Picks for Travel in February

Top Picks for February

Quirimbas Archipelago Mozambique

Season High Summer Average Temperature for February 27 Celsius 81 Fahrenheit

What to do: Sunset dhow cruises, trips to historic Ibo Island, relaxing on powdery beaches and sampling the day’s catch. Not to mention excellent diving and snorkeling.

Why: Quirimbas Archipelago is fairly untouched by cyclone season. Islands like Vamizi, Quilalea and Medjumbe bask in tropical sunshine.

Ngorongoro Crater – Tanzania

Season High Summer Average Temperature for February 22 Celsius 71 Fahrenheit

What to do: Some of the most superb Big 5 game viewing in the world.

Why: Ngorongoro has very easy game viewing because the animals never venture beyond the Crater’s walls. It is generally very busy with avid safari goers but February is one of its quieter times, meaning more space to yourself and better rates.

When to book: The Crater is very popular so don’t leave it until the last minute.

Samburu National Park Kenya

Season High Summer Average Temperature for February 28 Celsius 82 Fahrenheit

What: Game drives to spot the Samburu Special 5: these species are endemic to the region and comprise endangered Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk.

Why: Samburu lies in an arid part of Kenya but after the summer rains its doum palm groves and thorny scrub spring to life with plenty of grazing. Look out for baby gerenuks.

Top Picks For Travel in January

Posted on June 29th, 2020 by Overland Africa

Top Picks For Travel in January

Top Picks for January. Whether you are planning to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, experience a Big 5 safari in the Kruger National Park or relax on the beach in Zanzibar, timing is important. Our guidelines are based on our expert, on-the-ground knowledge of Africa’s travel seasons.

Zanzibar Tanzania

Season High Summer, Average Temperature for January 27 Celsius 80 Fahrenheit

What to Expect: Diving, Snorkeling, Sailing,  Spice Tour, Stone Town Tour

Why: Zanzibar is an island off the Indian Coast of Tanzania and averages only five rainy days for the month of January. The south of the main island offers the best diving conditions while the north has the best sunset views. For exceptional reef diving and snorkeling, head to the exclusive outlying islands of Pemba, Mafia and Mnemba. Zanzibar is also home to Stone Town, a World Heritage Site with plenty to see and do. A beach holiday on Zanzibar is the perfect way to relax after the early morning wake-up calls of a Southern Serengeti safari.

Southern Serengeti – Tanzania

Season High Summer Average Temperature for January 17 Celsius 63 Fahrenheit

What to Expect: Calving season during the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Why: The herds mass in the Southern Serengeti at this time of year to take advantage of the excellent grazing – depending on whether good rains fell in time – that will sustain their calves. About 8 000 calves are born every day and there is plenty of predator action from lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs and jackals. Game drives will take you to the heart of the action.

Gorilla Trekking Uganda

Season High Summer Average Temperature for January 11 Celsius 64 Fahrenheit

What to Expect: Trekking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Why: January generally coincides with a short dry spell, making it easier and more comfortable to trek because there is less rain and mud.

When to book: All gorilla-trekking destinations issue a limited number of permits per day and there is limited accommodation available in remote parks like Bwindi. Book as soon as you decide to go trekking to avoid disappointment – peak dry season is very popular.
