Day 1: Explore the Tarangire National Park

Meet your guide in bustling Arusha, a former garrison town that dates back to 1900, and, after a short briefing, depart for the open road. As you drive through the countryside, get to know your fellow travellers and take in the fabulous views of the fertile landscape and distant baobabs rolling by. Before long you arrive at Tarangire National Park, which is considered one of the most diverse and beautiful regions of northern Tanzania and is the sixth largest reserve in the country.

Enjoy a game drive through the area, where you are likely to spot the big cats, large herds of elephants and a multitude of plains game. The prolific birdlife along the Tarangire River – over 550 documented species - includes huge flocks of yellow lovebirds among a plethora of other species, a true bird-lovers’ paradise! After an afternoon’s adventures, leave the park and drive to your campsite nearby.

Day 2: Spot the flamingos of Lake Manyara

After breakfast, drive towards the Great Rift Valley escarpment, passing the vibrant town of Mto wa Mbu along the way. Along the base of the escarpment lies Lake Manyara National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty with the flamingo-studded lake as its centrepiece. It was Ernest Hemingway who described it as, ‘the loveliest lake in Africa’. The park is home to tree-climbing lions that use the thorny acacia trees as lookouts, as well as healthy numbers of buffalo, elephant, giraffe and, of course, grunting hippos and inquisitive baboons.

After a game drive through the park and forest of mahogany and fig trees, you continue to the Ngorongoro highlands, and as you arrive at your campsite on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, you will be treated to an absolutely breathtaking view!

Get up at dawn to see the sun rising over the 82 000km² crater, which must be one of the most spectacular sights on earth. After a quick breakfast, descend the precipitous slopes of the crater into the bowl of the caldera. This natural enclosure bounded by steep sides is home to an astonishing volume and variety of East African animals. It is entirely possible to encounter all of the Big 5 in one day here if you are lucky, and you also have the chance to see both rare white and black rhino species, as well as impressively large, black-maned lions.

After an extensive game drive exploring the region, you climb back out of the crater and leave the Ngorongoro highlands behind you. Your campsite for the night is in the scenic countryside near Mto wa Mbu.
